Fun ways to study English outside the classroom
Isn’t the classroom the best way to learn English fast?
Not usually! When you remember learning languages in school, what comes to mind? For me it was definitely NOT the best way to progress my language skills quickly. My memories are of …
Grafitti fillled course books.
Misbehaving classmates.
Stressed teachers.
Boring exercises.
Slow progress.
These kinds of experience are typical.
I avoided languages for a decade afterwards because I imagined that it would always be that way.
Let go of the past
Past memories of bad learning environments shouldn’t affect our attitude to learning today.
We are right to reject terrible learning conditions but wrong to think we can’t replace them with something better.
What’s better?
Anything where you have fun. It just depends on what your idea of fun is.
The secret is to combine English with what you are passionate about.
I love football and I’m learning Spanish so I do the following:
- Read football newspapers in cafes with a cup of coffee.
- Listen to Spanish commentary when I watch football matches on TV.
- Listen to Spanish podcasts where they talk about football.
- Join social media groups and follow pages with football content delivered in Spanish.
- Talk to people (in Spanish) about football.
Whatever you enjoy, you can find ways to combine it with learning English.
Here are some fun websites for you to learn English independently:
Music: lyricstraining.com
Films & TV (with subtitles): ororo.com
Apps: duolingo.com or memrise.com
Games: gamestolearnenglish.com or bamboozle.com
Never before in history, has there been so many fun ways to study outside of the classroom.
We just need to look for them!
