3 elegant linking phrases to reply to any question with fluency
I’m going to show you 3 linking phrases (also known as ‘linkers’ or ‘connectors’) that you can use to respond to B1 English email writing task questions. With these smooth introductions your written work will be more logical, fluent and boost your writing score.
Have a look at this exam task.
You need to answer each question but if you don’t introduce the topic before each reply, your writing seems random. This makes it harder for the reader to understand your intention, like this:
Hi Marina,
How have you been?
Lots of people meet at the youth club.
Now the reader would be thinking: “What’s the connection between me (‘how I’ve been’) and the youth club? I’m confused.”
But if you introduce the topic first so the reader knows what you are writing about, your work will have a logical and natural flow.
Hi Marina!
How have you been?
To answer your question about places to meet people, lots of people meet at the youth club.
3 linking phrases to introduce any topic
- To answer your question about … ,
To answer your question about places to meet people, lots of people meet at the youth club.
2. Regarding … ,
Regarding activities I like doing with my friends, my favourite is the drama club.
3. As for … ,
As for lunch this weekend, yes, I’d love you meet you!
Grammar and Punctuation
Notice that the word that follows each linking phrase, is a ‘thing’ (e.g. places / activities / lunch).
So always write a noun or a verb in gerund (-ing form) after your linker / connector.
And don’t forget to add the comma!
Find these writing tips and many more on my mini course ‘B1 Cambridge Email Writing Ace‘.
And as for the price of the course, it’s free!
